How many companies have a Chief AI Officer?

It depends on who is counted. On press and company evidence, 24 of the 2026 Fortune 500 have an enterprise-wide executive titled Chief AI Officer, and 54 do once fused titles such as Chief Data and AI Officer count. Surveys give higher shares: 76% of organizations whose CEOs answered IBM's 2026 study said they have one.

Is it true that 43% of Fortune 500 companies have a Chief AI Officer?

The 43% comes from one Rework.com article from April 2026 that gives no method, sample size or dataset. We found press or company evidence of the plain title at 24 of the 500 companies, and of a plain or fused chief AI title at 54.

Do most AI leaders have the Chief AI Officer title?

No. In a 2024 Gartner poll, 54% of organizations had a head of AI or AI leader, and 88% of those said the leader does not hold the title Chief AI Officer. A count of titles is therefore smaller than a count of companies with someone leading AI.

Which Fortune 500 companies have a Chief AI Officer?

Among the 20 largest, only Meta, whose Chief AI Officer is Alexandr Wang. 19 of the 54 companies with a plain or fused chief AI title are financial companies such as banks, insurers and asset managers.

How many U.S. businesses use AI?

Method

We searched Google for chief AI officer statistics, how many companies have a chief AI officer and CAIO statistics, and PubMed and OpenAlex for papers on AI leadership and adoption. Few papers measure how common the title is, so most outside numbers here come from surveys and federal data; we copied each from the producer's own page or the paper's abstract and counted how many of the ranking pages repeat it. Survey shares describe the organizations of the people who answered, not all companies. Our own numbers come from the ProfessionLens Fortune 500 census, which counts job titles on press or company evidence. A title count is a floor and is not a count of companies with someone leading AI.
