24 of the Fortune 500 use the Chief AI Officer title, 54 with fused titles

On 17 September 2026, 24 of the 500 companies on the 2026 Fortune 500 list had press or company evidence of a current, enterprise-wide Chief AI Officer. Among the 20 largest, only Meta has one: Alexandr Wang, appointed in June 2025. Apple, Alphabet, Nvidia, Walmart, Costco and Bank of America have none.

More companies added AI to an existing executive's title than created the plain one. 30 have a Chief Data and AI Officer, a Chief Technology and AI Officer or a similar fused title, Ford, Kroger and Cigna among them, which brings the count to 54 of 500. Another 14 have a chief AI title at a division, region or subsidiary, for 68 of 500. General Motors and Elevance Health are among 12 companies that had a Chief AI Officer who has since left or whose role was folded.

We expected to land well under 43%, the figure three pages give for the Fortune 500. It comes from one article on resources.rework.com, which we read again on 23 September 2026; it has no method section, no sample size and no dataset. A search for "chief AI officer" alone would have missed 16 of the 54, and press and LinkedIn barely overlap: press confirms 4 of the 7 LinkedIn holders and found 20 that a LinkedIn pass over profile titles never saw.

Key findings

2. 39 of 500 companies are claimed only by a page we do not accept as evidence: a vendor page, directory, conference bio, award bio or LinkedIn profile. 12 more had a holder who has left or whose role was folded.
3. For 381 of 500 companies, no search result and no reader placed a chief AI title at the company.
4. The 43% traces to one rework.com article with no method, sample size or dataset. Nine pages carry its figures or a similar 40%, and five of them name no source.

24 companies have an enterprise-wide Chief AI Officer

Each link is the page we matched the title against. All 24 returned HTTP 200 on 17 September 2026.

13 of the 24 rest on a company newsroom, release or leadership page, 7 on a trade outlet, 2 on a wire release, 1 on American Banker and 1 on Securian's annual report. Three rows are weaker than the rest. ServiceNow's appointment dates from March 2020 and the only current company source is a French-language blog author page. Applied Materials rests on a Business Wire release issued by a partner, CuspAI. Securian's holder is a Second Vice President, below the senior vice president tier that holds its CIO title. Dell's John Roese holds two titles, Global Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Officer, and we count that as an enterprise title.

30 more companies fuse AI into a wider enterprise title

Where a company source and an outlet disagree on a title, we use the company source. Skift and Fortune call Expedia's and Intuit's holders Chief AI Officers, but both companies' own pages say Chief AI and Data Officer.

14 companies have a divisional holder and 12 have a former one

A title that names a unit, region or subsidiary counts as divisional, such as UnitedHealth Group's, which names Optum, or Berkshire Hathaway's, which sits at TransRe. The other twelve are Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Salesforce, Honeywell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Marsh & McLennan, Lam Research, Omnicom Group, Equitable Holdings and Franklin Templeton.

The 12 former holders are at Elevance Health, General Motors, IBM, Intel, ADP, Aramark, Edward Jones, Stanley Black & Decker, Entergy, Community Health Systems, Lululemon and Western Digital. A row goes here only when a source states the title in the past tense or puts the same person in the same title at another company.

A claim that lives only on a contact-data vendor profile, an analyst directory, a conference or award bio, a forum post or a LinkedIn profile goes to unverified. 33 of the 39 unverified rows name a person and give a title string, and 36 carry the page that claims them, so readers can check them. Fastenal, Paccar and WESCO International sit there on a LinkedIn profile title alone, and CVS Health on a contact-data vendor profile. If even half of the 39 are real, the enterprise count rises.

The LinkedIn pass found 7 enterprise holders and press found 20 it missed

A separate pass over LinkedIn profile titles covered 483 of the 500 companies and found a Chief AI Officer title at 11, 7 of them enterprise-wide. Press confirms 4 of the 7: Dell Technologies, GE HealthCare Technologies, S&P Global and Ebay. At UnitedHealth Group and Entergy the profile still carried the title after the holder had left. Press and company sources found 20 enterprise holders the LinkedIn pass missed, including Meta, Target, Boeing, Eli Lilly and Merck. Profile titles are self-reported and undated, so we count no company on a profile title alone.

The rework.com article has 68 links and none of them is a source

No date is visible on the page; its JSON-LD gives datePublished 2026-04-14. Besides the 43%, it says "LinkedIn tracked 94 CAIO appointments among Fortune 500 companies in 2025 alone, compared to 30 in 2024 and fewer than 10 in 2023", with no link to LinkedIn, and it gives a 210% growth rate and sector shares of 62% for financial services, 51% for healthcare and 47% for retail. All five sentences with figures were still on the page on 23 September 2026.

The 43% includes "an equivalent titled executive with dedicated AI strategy ownership", and the page does not say how much of the number that qualifier carries. Of its 68 anchors, six point off the site: Rework's social accounts, the author's LinkedIn profile and two summarize-this links.

The 94 counts appointment events in one calendar year, and our 24 counts people holding the title on one day. A 2025 appointee who left in 2026 is in the 94 and not in our count, and this file has 12 former holders.

The article names UnitedHealth Group, American Express and Lowe's as appointments within a 60-day window. UnitedHealth Group's current Chief AI Officer title names Optum, and its enterprise holder from 2022 left in 2025. At American Express we found no Chief AI Officer in any pass; its most senior named AI executive is Berta Rodriguez-Hervas, Senior Vice President, Enterprise AI Platforms. Lowe's leadership page names Seemantini Godbole Executive Vice President, Chief Information and AI Officer, which is in our fused table. Our first two passes missed her because that wording matches none of the phrases we searched.

Nine pages carry the figures and five name no source

Three pages carry the 43%: rework.com, valueaddvc.com and peopleinai.com. Five carry a 40% forecast instead: presenc.ai, shawnkanungo.com, aarondsilva.me and two LinkedIn posts. Only presenc.ai links rework.com, and five of the nine pages name no source at all. The 40% cannot come from the Rework page, because aarondsilva.me is dated 24 January 2026, close to three months before Rework's JSON-LD date. We could not read the Facebook post behind its login wall, so its sentence comes from the search snippet. repeaters.csv has dates, Tranco ranks and fetch status for each page.

Five other figures count something other than the Fortune 500

IBM's 2026 CEO Study gives 76% of surveyed organizations, from 2,000 CEOs in 33 geographies. Gartner's June 2024 poll of 1,808 webinar respondents found that 88% said their AI leader does not hold the Chief AI Officer title. Russell Reynolds' Fortune 500 study counts top technology officers and publishes no Chief AI Officer share, and a survey of roughly 110 companies reported by EWSolutions gives 38.5%. An 11% to 26% to 40% series on two blogs never defines its population. figures_in_circulation.csv lists all 10 figures we found with the population each one measures.

Method

The universe is the 2026 Fortune 500, 500 companies, and every share uses 500 as the denominator. We ran three query passes through the Serper API, one query per company per pass, keeping the top 10 organic results. Pass 1 searched "<company name>" "chief AI officer", with "chief artificial intelligence officer" as a fallback at the four companies where the first query found no result carrying the phrase; the fallback returned nothing. Pass 2 searched four fused phrases in one OR query: "chief data and AI officer", "chief AI and data officer", "chief digital and AI officer" and "chief data, analytics and AI officer". Pass 3 re-queried four companies under the names people use: USAA, Plains All American Pipeline, Kiewit and Edward Jones.

We then read all 7,912 cached organic results for the 437 companies still in none or unverified, with no filter, and 5,422 of those results carried a chief-level title string containing AI. Every one of the 500 rows has a read_note saying what its results contained. We fetched every cited page through a rotating proxy and matched the quoted title against the page text. The classification rules are in METHOD.md.

We cannot see two kinds of holder. An appointment nobody announced leaves no page to find, so "none" means we found no public record. And Serper returns only the top ten results per query, so coverage below the tenth result is missed even though a person read everything that came back. Titles outside our six phrases, such as "chief analytics and AI officer" or "head of AI", are under-counted, so 54 is likely low as well. Titles that appear only on LinkedIn profiles are excluded from every count.

Data

census.csv has 500 rows, one per company. The dataset folder also holds the appointed, combined and former rosters, the pages repeating the figures, the 10 figures in circulation and two change logs with 39 and 61 rows.

Corrections

An earlier version of this census used a proximity filter that left 315 companies unread, and a reviewer who sampled 20 of them found four companies that hold or held the title, so we then read every company's results in full. The Revisions section of METHOD.md lists every change and the three reviews behind them.
