No Inc 5000 company lists a sustainability chief. 53 of the Fortune 500 do

ProfessionLens, 2026-09-15

We took the 500 domains on the Fortune 500 2026 list and the 4,969 on the Inc 5000 2026 list and pulled every person row filed under them out of a LinkedIn-derived people set. That is 8,554,225 rows on the Fortune 500 side and 661,586 on the Inc 5000 side, 9,215,811 rows added together. Each title was matched against 14 published regexes, one per C-suite role, and every match on sustainability, diversity or an AI-adjacent chief wording was read by hand before it was counted. Titles are self-reported on LinkedIn and the rows carry a collection stamp rather than a date the person held the job, so every figure is what the September 2026 snapshot shows.

483 of the 500 Fortune 500 domains have any person rows, and 4,469 of the 4,969 Inc 5000 domains do. Those two numbers are the denominator for every share below and we print them beside each one.

We see the two lists at very different depths. The median Fortune 500 company here is seen through 10,123 person rows and the median Inc 5000 company through 37, a factor of about 274. A company observed through 37 people can come up empty on a title simply because the one person holding it is not among those 37 rows. A zero in this report is a zero in these rows: it says that no person row filed under those companies carries the title, not that nobody at any of them holds it. So every cross-list comparison runs inside a band of companies with a similar number of rows, with the n printed on both sides.

We expected the depth correction to eat most of the gaps. On several titles it did: chief technology officer lands at 23.1% of 117 Fortune 500 companies and 23.1% of 208 Inc 5000 companies inside the 500 to 5,000 rows band, [500, 5,000). We also expected the sustainability zero to turn into a small non-zero once depth was matched. It did not. No Inc 5000 company matched in any band, under either regex. Two Inc 5000 companies do list a chief-level diversity officer, Smarsh and iCapital, and we name all four matching Inc 5000 rows below. A third result, a chief revenue officer gap running the other way, is real inside the matched band, but its Fortune 500 side is 2 companies, a cell under 5, so it stays out of the headline and is printed with its numerator masked.

Key findings

  1. 0 of the 4,469 covered Inc 5000 companies list anyone with a chief sustainability officer title, 0.0%. 53 of the 483 covered Fortune 500 companies do, 11.0%. The zero means no person row filed under those companies carries the title. Source: ProfessionLens, September 2026.
  2. The Inc 5000 zero holds in every depth band. In the 1,000 or more rows band, [1,000, inf), it is 0 of 100 Inc 5000 companies, 0.0%, against 52 of 429 Fortune 500 companies, 12.1%. In the 100 to 500 rows band, [100, 500), where the Inc 5000 side is largest, it is 0 of 924, 0.0%, against 0 of 16, 0.0%.
  3. Narrowing to the exact phrase "chief sustainability officer" and dropping the wider chief-level wordings leaves 48 of 483 Fortune 500 companies and 0 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies.
  4. 63 people at Fortune 500 companies hold a matched sustainability chief title and 0 people at Inc 5000 companies do.
  5. 65 of 483 Fortune 500 companies list a chief-level diversity officer, 13.5%, and 2 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies do, 0.0%, Smarsh and iCapital. On the exact phrase "chief diversity officer" it is 28 of 483 Fortune 500 companies and 0 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies.
  6. Widening to any chief, VP, SVP, EVP or head whose title names diversity, DEI or inclusion gives 113 of 483 Fortune 500 companies, 23.4%, and 4 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies, 0.1%. That Inc 5000 numerator is under 5 and all four rows are named below.
  7. Inside the 500 to 5,000 rows band, [500, 5,000), 14.4% of Inc 5000 companies list a chief revenue officer (n=208) against 1.7% of Fortune 500 companies (n=117). The Fortune 500 numerator there is under 5.
  8. Three of the 14 titles swap which list leads once depth is matched: chief revenue officer, chief product officer and chief growth officer. Chief technology officer goes level, at 23.1% of 117 Fortune 500 companies and 23.1% of 208 Inc 5000 companies. The other ten keep the Fortune 500 ahead.
  9. Chief revenue officers are concentrated by Inc 5000 industry. Security runs at 20.8% of 77 covered companies and software at 16.9% of 344, against 3.2% of 222 in consumer products, which is the lowest share of any industry whose count is 5 or more. Counts from cro_by_industry.csv.

53 of 483 Fortune 500 companies list a chief sustainability officer and 0 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies do

The Fortune 500 share is 11.0% and the Inc 5000 share is 0.0%. In the 500 to 5,000 rows band, [500, 5,000), it is 0.0% of 208 Inc 5000 companies against 1.7% of 117 Fortune 500 companies, where the Fortune 500 numerator is under 5. In the 1,000 or more rows band, [1,000, inf), it is 0.0% of 100 Inc 5000 companies against 12.1% of 429 Fortune 500 companies. In the 100 to 500 rows band, [100, 500), where the Inc 5000 side holds 924 companies and the Fortune 500 side 16, both sides are 0.0%. Tightening the regex to the exact phrase takes the Fortune 500 count from 53 to 48 and leaves the Inc 5000 count at 0.

Two things came out of the hand review. PepsiCo has five people with the title and every one of them is regional: AMESA, Latam, International Beverages, Europe and North America. No row in this data carries the title for PepsiCo as a whole. Several other holders wear the role as a second hat, including Sprouts Farmers Market, where the chief legal officer holds it, and DuPont and Eastman Chemical, where the chief technology officer does.

We dropped two rows. A Boston Scientific row read "Executive Coordinator to VP, HR & Global Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer", which names the manager's role and not the person's own, and a second PepsiCo profile for Manali Desai duplicated a person already counted there.

65 of 483 Fortune 500 companies list a chief-level diversity officer and 2 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies do

On the chief-level regex the Fortune 500 side is 65 of 483 covered companies, 13.5%, and 71 people. The Inc 5000 side is 2 of 4,469, 0.0%, and 2 people. On the exact phrase it is 28 of 483 and 0 of 4,469. Widening to any chief, VP, SVP, EVP or head whose title names diversity, DEI, D&I or inclusion gives 113 of 483 Fortune 500 companies, 23.4%, against 4 of 4,469 Inc 5000 companies, 0.1%. That Inc 5000 numerator is under 5, and the table below names every one of the four rows.

Because the Inc 5000 side is close to an absence, here is every Inc 5000 row matching any of the three diversity regexes:

Company Inc rank Person Title as written Regex matched
iCapital 2,492 Rachel Cheeks-Givan "SVP Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer" chief-level
Smarsh 4,566 Leander Lesure "Chief People and Diversity Officer" chief-level
Dynasty Financial Partners 3,322 Gordon Abel "Managing Director, Chief Marketing Officer & Head of Diversity and Inclusion" wider DEI
MRI Software 4,580 Carol Lewis "Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion" wider DEI

The figure in circulation comes from the Wikipedia page on the role, which states that roughly 52% of Fortune 500 companies employ diversity officers and that the number was 53 percent in 2022, up from under 20 percent in 2005. That page carries no primary count of its own, and its universe is any diversity leadership role across a survey era. Ours counts people whose own current title names diversity or inclusion at chief level in a September 2026 snapshot: 65 of 483 covered Fortune 500 companies, 13.5%. The closer comparison is the wider DEI regex, which takes VPs and heads too, at 113 of 483, 23.4%.

In the 500 to 5,000 rows band, 14.4% of Inc 5000 companies list a chief revenue officer against 1.7% of Fortune 500 companies

The chief revenue officer row carries the largest ratio in the table and a Fortune 500 numerator under 5, so we print the masked cell and keep the ratio out of the headline. In the deeper band it narrows: 15.0% of 100 Inc 5000 companies against 7.2% of 429 Fortune 500 companies.

16.9% of 344 covered Inc 5000 software companies list a chief revenue officer, against 3.2% of 222 in consumer products

Industry is the Inc 5000 list's own field and the Fortune 500 file carries none, so there is no matching cut on the other side. It matters because the Inc 5000 selects on three-year revenue growth and skews to services and software, where a revenue chief is an ordinary title, so part of the gap is sector rather than list. Rows below are the industries with at least 100 covered companies, ranked by share. The full cut is in cro_by_industry.csv.

Among the ten that keep direction, the widest gap in percentage points is chief financial officer, 65.0% of 117 Fortune 500 companies against 41.3% of 208 Inc 5000 companies. The widest on a ratio is chief sustainability officer, 1.7% of 117 Fortune 500 companies, a numerator under 5, against 0.0% of 208 Inc 5000 companies. Chief data officer sits between them, 6.0% of 117 against 0.5% of 208.

30 of 208 Inc 5000 companies in the 500 to 5,000 rows band list a chief revenue officer and under 5 of 117 Fortune 500 companies do

Here are five titles per list as the holders wrote them. Companies inside the band, [500, 5,000), come first, deepest first. The band holds 2 Fortune 500 companies with a match, News Corp. and Nasdaq, so the other three Fortune 500 rows are the deepest covered companies with a match outside it. All five Inc 5000 rows sit inside the band.

Counts of 2 and 30 here are companies, not people. Nasdaq carries 2 matching people and we name one of them.

Fortune 500: Siddharth Ray at News Corp., "Chief Revenue Officer", 3,340 person rows; Erwan Jameron at Nasdaq, "Chief Revenue Officer", 2,137 rows; and three at Microsoft, 96,559 rows, reading "Chief Revenue Officer (CRO)", "Chief Operating Officer Chief Revenue Officer, Western Europe" and "Microsoft 365 Copilot Chief Revenue Officer Emea".

Inc 5000: K. Patrick Armstrong at ReSource Pro, "Chief Revenue Officer", 2,891 person rows; Jeff Purdy at Applied Systems, "Chief Revenue Officer", 2,192 rows; Chelsea Cooke at Best Version Media, "Publisher Chief Revenue Officer", 2,152 rows; Phylip Morgan at Pax8, "Chief Revenue Officer Pax8 Emea", 1,747 rows; and Brian Boyd at ModMed, "Chief Revenue Officer (CRO)", 1,746 rows.

The Microsoft rows show why the Fortune 500 side of this cell is awkward. The deepest company in the data has three matches and two of them are regional sales roles that happen to carry the words.

9,215,811 person rows, the two lists added, produced 5,829 classified Fortune 500 matches and 3,337 Inc 5000 ones

Fortune 500 Inc 5000
Domains in list 500 4,969
Companies with person rows 483 4,469
Person rows scanned 8,554,225 661,586
Matching the broad server-side regex 7,727 3,446
Dropped by hand review 2 0
Dropped by the exclusion regex 638 56
Classified into a published title 5,829 3,337
Matched the broad regex, no published title 1,258 53

One person can match more than one title, so the title columns do not sum to the number of people. The four regex stages in this table come from the match log the script keeps while it runs, one row per matched person. That log is not shipped. What we publish per company is list_titles_by_company.csv, which carries the per-company flags and people counts, so the four stage figures cannot be recomputed from the published files.

Method

We joined two public company lists to a person table. Domains are lowercased, the scheme and any www. stripped, and deduplicated inside each list. The join is an exact string match on the person row's company domain, with no fuzzy matching and no subsidiary rollup, so a person filed under a subsidiary domain does not count for the parent.

Queries run as $in batches of 50 domains against the domain index, with a broad title regex applied server-side. No full collection scan was run, and every published title regex is a subset of that broad filter. The 14 regexes, the broad filter and the exclusion pattern are printed in METHOD.md.

The exclusion pattern drops assistants, deputies, chiefs of staff, "former", "ex", "aspiring", "retired" and "outgoing" holders, and "office of the" and "to the chief" constructions, before any title is counted. Divisional titles are kept, because the company does employ someone writing that title, and the title text is published in the roster file.

Every sustainability and diversity match on both lists was read by hand, 301 rows including the wider DEI regex, and two were dropped as false positives. Five chief revenue officer matches per list were read the same way; the rest of that cell is regex output that was not individually verified.

The three depth bands are half-open intervals on the person row count: 500 to 5,000 rows is [500, 5,000) (Fortune 500 n=117, Inc 5000 n=208), 1,000 or more rows is [1,000, inf) (n=429 and n=100) and 100 to 500 rows is [100, 500) (n=16 and n=924). Every n above is computed on those intervals. Bands overlap by construction.

Percentiles in the coverage table use the nearest-rank convention on the sorted per-company row counts, zero indexed: index = min(len - 1, int(p * len)). The same sentence is in METHOD.md.

A share is always companies with the title over companies in that list with any person rows, never over the nominal 500 or 4,969.

Rows carry a fetched_at collection stamp, which is when the row was collected and not a date on which the person held the title. It is not an as-of date and no time series can be built from this.

Limitations:

  1. Titles are self-reported on a professional network profile. This is not a filing, a proxy statement or an org chart.
  2. There is no as-of date per row. A person who has left can still be present and a recent hire can be missing. Every figure is as observed in the September 2026 snapshot.
  3. Coverage is 483 and 4,469, not 500 and 4,969, and that is the denominator everywhere.
  4. Observation depth differs by about 274 times at the median. Raw cross-list shares measure depth as much as adoption, which is why the bands exist.
  5. 0 Inc 5000 companies with a chief sustainability officer means no person row here carries that title there, which is what the lead says.
  6. The Inc 5000 selects on three-year revenue growth, which is selection on the trait that produces a revenue chief, and the two lists differ in sector mix.
